Starting a family is a seismic change. Everything shifts during pregnancy and the postpartum year – daily rhythms, priorities, identities, body image, and relationships.
Because of this, the transition to parenthood can be an extremely triggering time and can reopen old wounds and traumas. Many people choose to initiate or re-engage in therapy as they become parents in order to address unresolved feelings about their own families, sense of self worth, and patterns in relationships.
Additionally, becoming a parent can often feel overwhelming, isolating, and exhausting. You might feel disconnected from your own autonomy and sense of self. Your mental health might feel shaky. It may feel impossible to live up to everyone’s expectations, including your own.
These experiences are so common. It’s estimated that one in five new parents will experience symptoms of depression, anxiety, or trauma during pregnancy or the first year postpartum.
Our work together will aim to support you in navigating and coping with this challenging, vulnerable time while also helping you adjust and acclimate to your new role, new responsibilities, and new normal.
No one could have prepared you for the overwhelming love you’d have for your children or the impact that parenthood would have on your life, relationships, and sense of self. The joy of watching your children grow also comes with constant learning and adjusting to each new stage. Unique joys and challenges arise with each year. From infancy to empty-nest and even beyond, sometimes these parenting-related stressors can leave you feeling anxious, worried, sad, or alone.
You might also feel eager to break dysfunctional or abusive family cycles, but are unsure how to do so.
As parents, we are all doing our best with the skills that we currently have. Therapy offers an opportunity to build upon these skills. With compassion and curiosity, I will explore your unique parenting concerns and goals and how they fit into your busy, full life. We will work together to develop the insights, skills, and habits that will help you make positive changes for yourself and your family.
Whether you became a parent 4 days ago or 40 years ago, there is always room for support, healing, and change.
You’re feeling anxious, burnt out, or are going through a stressful life transition like menopause, career changes, empty nest, or grief. Your relationships might be strained or dysfunctional. Maybe there’s lingering pain from past experiences impeding your ability to connect with yourself and others. Your emotions might feel overwhelming and unmanageable. You don’t feel like yourself and want to feel better.
The good news? Change is possible with connection, communication, and collaboration with a trusted person on a regular basis. That is the essence of therapy.
In our work together, we will explore your personal experiences while working to deepen self-awareness, strengthen coping skills, and foster resiliency so that your symptoms and stressors feel more manageable in the context of your daily life.
Whether you’re facing pregnancy or postpartum challenges, parenting stress, anxiety, burnout, grief, or a major life transition, support is available. Let’s create a space where you can feel heard, understood, and empowered to move forward.
